Meet the new star of Sister Act

After a long and arduous search across the globe (fingering vast pockets of untapped talent) Whoopi Goldberg has finally found the perfect girl to take the lead role of Deloris in her new musical version of hit movie Sister Act.

This brand spanking new West End Diva is Patina Miller, a relative newcomer from South Carolina whose major success in showbiz so far has been the acclaimed Broadway revival of Hair.

If you’ve never born witness to the fun-filled frolic that is the frenetic story of Sister Act then you’re missing out on a big chunk of heartwarming pie that I will now rehash into a 30 second cupcake…

‘Deloris Van Cartier’ is a 70’s night club singer embroiled in deep romantic relations with a nasty mobster (love can be a cruel drug). When she witnesses’ her beau killing a man to death “Enough is Enough” and she runs away to blab her mouth off to the cops!

Mr. Mobster boyfriend gets angry and decides to silence his former love mistress for good…with bullets and everything.

The police get wind of the plot and stuff Deloris in a nunnery for safekeeping until the trial, where she gains the trust of the other Nuns who are amazed by her fast tongue and liberal ways. The singing sister soon becomes “HEAD HONCHO” off the nunnery choir, Bustin’ Out some bad ass gospel classics all over the strict morals of the stuffy Mother Superior.

Risking life and limb, evading mobsters, and battling with religious top brass at every turn, Deloris cuts a hilarious and sassy rut through every sticky situation she encounters.

Starring alongside Patina will be Sheila Hancock as the aforementioned ‘Mother Superior’. To many, a national treasure and a multi-BAFTA nominee, Sheila’s career spans theatre, television, radio and film and she won a 2007 Olivier Award for her performance in Cabaret. Dad’s Army and EastEnders actor Ian Lavender also stars as ‘Monsignor Howard’. SISTER ACT opens at the London Palladium on 2 June, following previews from 7 May.

SISTER ACT features a score by Alan Menken, eight-time Oscar winner and composer of many of the world famous songs from Disney’s movies, including The Little Mermaid, Beauty & The Beast, Aladdin and Enchanted, with lyrics from his long- time collaborator Glenn Slater. The book is by the award-winning team Cheri and Bill Steinkellner, whose writing credits include the classic television comedy Cheers, and the production is directed by Peter Schneider.

If you’re lucky there still might be a few preview tickets left in May, but the show officially opens on June 2nd and has already sold over 25.000 tickets!
