When I was just a slip of a little lad there was one special night every year that would often cause me just as much excitement as Christmas Eve, and that’s really saying something because Christmas Eve would send me spasmodic!
The sacred and holy night of which I speak was the extra special evening when a super-sarcastic Terry Wogan would expand my musical pallet into new European territories that had once seemed unimaginable. As the perceptive little tykes among you know, I’m clearly talking about the genius concept that is The Eurovision Song Contest.
Excitement for Eurovision would boil and simmer for months before, kicking off with “A Song for Europe” in which the benevolent governments of the day would grant the British public our democratic right to vote on the power melody that would hopefully elevate us to the heady heights of musical glory. Although it would always frustrate me when inevitably my countrymen would make a hideous gaff and our song would turn out to be, well……….poo!
On the week of the big show Mummy would splash out on the Radio Times which would be totally covered with imagines pertaining to the event. And inside there would be a little write-up of each country and a card to mark down the score, which Daddy would Photostat to save on family arguments. Then we would sit back in comfy chairs and watch as the strange events of the night unfolded before our very eyes. All delivered via a trusty satellite beaming from distant and far off lands such as Ireland.
The reason I’m telling you about this rather marvellous period of my life is not because counselling can be expensive and I see this as the next best thing. But more because I want to lay the perfect groundwork to tell you about a new show that is set to be a juggernaut of a spectacular West End hit factory. So get ready and get set, maybe even sit down in case you faint while I tell you about the new phenomenon that is EUROBEAT.
Eurobeat Cometh
We have known about the imminent arrival of this show for a few months now, but I did not really get the idea of it to start with. My first impressions were from the bold tag line which reads, “WARNING - Do not wear mascara to Eurobeat.” In my mind this either meant that the producers were very big on animal welfare or some big laughs the show would have.
I’m always sceptical about such claims and reserve judgment in the bank of my heart until the key of proof is placed in my hand. But all of a sudden I started to hear these great noises coming from the Edinburgh Festival about this new show “taking the mick out of Eurovision” and “you can vote for your favourite songs by text message” and “the songs are hilarious” and “they give you national flags when you go in the theatre!” I was intrigued.
YouTube is my friend, so I hit the site to see what all the fuss was about, now I’m really hooked. The clip starts with the ever-lovable Terry Wogan introducing the show in his inimitable style before transporting the viewer to a parallel Eurovision universe with more funny musical stereotypes than you could shake a packet of cocktail sticks at.
